Mission, History & Founding Story

Nara Prefectural University (NPU) focuses on educating people who can “rediscover Nara and contribute to Japan and the world.” The campus is embedded in a living museum—UNESCO World Heritage sites are within walking distance—yet its mission is forward-looking: connect regional realities to global perspectives through intensive seminars, community-engaged projects, and interdisciplinary study. The university traces its origins to 1953 as a short college, transitioned to Nara Prefectural Commerce University in 1990, and opened as NPU in 2001. After a major shift to a daytime four-year program in 2007, NPU consolidated into the Faculty of Regional Creation in 2014 and, in April 2025, reorganized its curriculum into six “commons” (interdisciplinary domains) to strengthen cross-field learning. Key Strengths & Unique Features

One-Faculty Model: Regional Creation (with Six Commons)

Instead of multiple faculties, NPU runs a single faculty with interdisciplinary depth. Students decide their focus after sampling across fields, then select two of the “six commons” from junior year to build a double-major style profile. This lets you combine, for example, Tourism Creation with Social Sciences or Engineering & Natural Sciences, depending on your goals. • Tourism Creation
  • Regional Design (地域構想)
  • Global Coexistence (国際共生)
  • Humanities
  • Social Sciences
  • Engineering & Natural Sciences

Small-Seminar Culture & Active Learning

NPU emphasizes dialogue-based seminars from first year onward. Students move from foundational seminars to “commons” seminars, and finally to specialized research seminars—typically in small groups. This structure supports intensive mentoring and strong presentation/discussion skills. Curriculum (seminar pathway) | NIAD University Portraits

Real-World Field Projects in a World-Heritage City

The city of Nara is both your classroom and your lab. Courses and project seminars collaborate with local partners on tourism strategy, cultural preservation, community design, and regional economy themes. Being minutes from Todaiji, Kofukuji, and Kasuga Taisha offers a unique setting for heritage- and culture-related study. Location/Access | Faculty Features

Compact Campus, Study-Friendly Facilities

Everything is walkable. You’ll find a Learning Commons, library (≈120,000 volumes), seminar rooms, labs, and an “Open Space” inside the Commons building. Student services and international support are centralized. Campus Map & Facilities | Campus (NIAD)

Value for Money: Public Tuition with Support

Annual tuition is the standard public-university rate (¥535,800), with a lower entrance fee for Nara residents. Additional dues are modest. Scholarships and fee reductions exist under national schemes and university support. Official Tuition | NIAD Tuition/Fees

Student Life for Internationals

Clubs & Circles that Welcome Overseas Students

From sports (futsal, volleyball, archery) to culture (light music, tea ceremony, photography) and community volunteering, there’s a wide array of student groups. Groups vary in English usage, but many are beginner-friendly. Clubs & Circles (list)

Support & Wellbeing (Visa, Housing Guidance, Counselling)

International support is coordinated on campus; you can get help navigating procedures and daily life. NPU also provides harassment consultation, office hours with faculty, and mental-health counselling with clinical psychologists. Harassment Consultation | Office Hours | Mental Counselling

Language Exchange & English Café

Beyond classes, the university runs casual English Café sessions and various international events/lectures. Language Initiatives | International Seminars

Partner Institutions & Exchange Options

NPU sends students to overseas partner universities through long-term exchange (tuition paid at NPU, not at the host), university-organized long-term dispatch, and short-term language programs. Credit recognition is available on return, and safety information plus insurance enrollment are part of standard procedures. Local Climate & Lifestyle

Nara has four distinct seasons. Based on recent Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) observations at the Nara station, midsummer days often see daytime highs in the low-to-mid 30s °C, while winters bring daytime highs around 8–10°C and overnight lows near 0°C. Expect humid summers and relatively dry, cold winters. Cherry blossoms peak in spring; autumn is crisp and clear—great for temple walks. JMA Nara—Monthly Temperature Tables

International Student Statistics

According to NIAD’s University Portraits for the Faculty of Regional Creation (as of May 1, 2024), degree-seeking international enrollment was reported as approx. 0%. This figure does not include short-term/exchange students, whose numbers vary by semester. If you’re an overseas applicant, contact the international office for the latest intake and exchange availability. NIAD Student Composition (gender/intl.) | About International Exchange
